Stained Glass
The two stained glass windows erected in the Parish Kirk were formerly the War Memorial in Maybole Old Church. Situated side by side, in the West wall and on the right as you entered the church, there was beneath them a plaque bearing the names of those in the congregation who laid down their lives for their country. They are beautiful indeed, radiant in their reds, purples and gold. One of these depicts Abram girt for Battle and the other Melchizedek the priest of God, King of Salem, meeting Abram with bread and wine as the latter returned from the battle of the Kings and the rescue of his nephew, Lot.
Interestingly this was the subject of the famous debate in Maybole between the abbot of Crossraguel and John Knox. The window depicting Abram bears Christ’s words viz: – “He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one” St Luke Chapter 22 V36.
That which depicts Melchizedek bears the words “ The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace”. James Chapter 3 V18.
Beneath these biblical characters are inscribed the words, “A time of war, and a time of peace”. Ecclesiastes Chapter 2 V8.
